A Lutheran team competed in the United Church League between 1952 and 1960. The present club was formed in 1969 by members of the Bethlehem Lutheran Youth. Prior to entering the SAAFL, the club forged a strong history in theUnitedChurchand Adelaide Suburban Associations. Between 1974 and 1979 the Club won 5 premierships, including a double premiership in 1979.The club joined the SAAFL in 1985, two years after it moved to its present home ground and adopted its current style of jumper in 1983. The Club is known as the Bulldogs. Major additions were made to the existing clubrooms in 1991 and they have been continually maintained and improved since then to provide functional and central facilities for all of its members and friends. The club is unique in providing a country club atmosphere in the heart of the city.

Since joining the SAAFL, the Club has won a further 9 premierships, including A Grade premierships in 1986 and 1988, our only C Grade premiership in 1992 and double premierships in 1991 and 2004. Ian (Fos) Williams coached 3 A Grade premierships during this era during his 12 year coaching stint. Geoff Brereton coached the last A Grade premiership in 2004.

Our last premierships were in Division 5 Reserves in 2007 and 2011. Nick Kriewaldt won 3 SAAFL Medals in 2007-2009 and in 2011 equalled the club record of 314 games with Simon Rodger. Our other 300 game player is Chris Jantke with 314 games. Multiple A Grade Best and Fairest winners (4) are Tim Liebelt and Simon Rodger. Mark Borgas is the leading Club goal kicker with 518 goals.

The Club is proud that John Halbert, OAM has been Club Patron for the last 15 years. Full details of the early history of the club are documented in the book titled “A Bulldog For Me” written by Wayne Gladigau and published in 1994. Further updates of the clubs history are available on the club website, www.alfc.com.au.
