SAAFL History – 2000

The new millennium was rung in by the SAAFL with the decision to introduce a Final Five in Division 1 then extend it throughout all divisions in future years. It was argued that this gave players a greater opportunity to play finals football and so could only help promote the game. Also, the previous experience of playing finals under lights led to the decision to play some night games atKilburn Oval during the minor round and some night finals at Norwood. Administration changes included the appointment of Barry Curtin as the League’s Public Relations Officer, and, following the resignation of Chairman Maurie Ranger in May, his replacement with John Wilson, a Port District stalwart. And in keeping with the times, a Future Directions Seminar was held to develop a strategic plan for the League, and one important rule change made whereby any officials such as runners or trainers caught in the 50-metre arc on kick-out would see a free kick awarded to the opposing team.

Two clubs were admitted to the League, Wingfield Royals & Westminster O.S., both of whom had served before, and Golden North fizzled out after burning bright for one whole season.

The top 6 at the end of the minor round mirrored that of the previous year but PHOS replaced Uni in the top Five. District was slow start against Goodwood in the Elimination Final at Alberton but came home to win by just one point 11.12 to 12.5, while in a hard, close-fought Qualifying Final at Norwood, PHOS did enough to beat Kilburn 10.11 to 8.12. District had the luxury of playing the First Semi at local Alberton Oval and came fast out of the blocks to lead by 37 points at half time. The Knights played better in the second half but couldn’t bridge the gap and lost 12.9 to 16.8. At Kilburn, Broadview were even more ferocious starters scoring 7.6 to PHOS’s solitary goal in the first quarter of the Second Semi. The Phantoms came back into the match with 4 goals in the opening 7 minutes of the third quarter, but the Tigers steadied to win comfortably 20.8 to 13.6. The Prelim. between District & PHOS was played on Friday night at Norwood Oval in miserable weather, but the Phantoms mocked the conditions by scoring 13 goals straight before forcing a kick-out. District on the other hand had trouble locating the uprights and went down 1.11 to 16.4. The Grand Final was also played on a Friday night but at Alberton where the Phantoms made amends for their defeat in the Second Semi by holding the Tigers to just 1 goal in the first quarter then scoring 6 goals in the second quarter to lead at half time 7.1 to 3.2. This proved conclusive as the Tigers fought tooth and nail to restrict the Phantoms to just 4 points in the second half but lost the match 6.6 to 7.5.

In Division 2 former AFL star Andrew Jarman replaced Scott Peters as coach of Gaza., and his AFL team mate Scott Hodgesreplaced Mark Downie at Seaton Ramblers.

Down from Division 1, Edwardstown dominated the minor round while Gaza was the big improver in second place up from seventh in 1999.

In the First Semi at Kilburn, Nick Emmet dominated at centre half forward for Scotch in its 14.11 to 10.12 win against Pooraka. Inaccurate goal-shooting cost Gaza dearly in its Second Semi loss at Norwood 12.18 to 15.7. The Prelim. Final at Kilburn was a beauty as no more than 5 points separated Gaza and Scotch, the final score favouring the Eagles 10.13 to 10.9. Gaza went on with the job in the Grand Final at Norwood on the Friday night handing the Towns only their second loss for the season 6.7 to 10.8, due in no small part to a best-on-ground performance by coach Andrew Jarman.

The First Semi at Kenilworth was won by Salisbury in the second term scoring 5 goals to just 1 from Ignatians, then hanging on for a final score of 9.12 to 7.7. In contrast, Parks had to turn on the afterburners in the final quarter to draw away from ROCS and win 14.11 to 9.8 in the Second Semi at Edwardstown. The Prelim. Final was also at Edwardstown where ROCS came back from nearly 5 goals down at half time to beat Salisbury West 17.17 to 12.10 led by coach Marcus Trimboli and full forward Drew Litster who kicked 10 goals. The Grand Final at Hectorville was a repeat of the Second Semi as Flinders Park defeated ROCS 9.5 to 5.10, assisted by greater accuracy in front of goals in the first half when it led 6.0 to 2.6 and by full back Daniel Byrnes holding Litster goalless.
