SAAFL History – 2005

The wizardry of the computer age saw the demise of registration numbers

New coaches were appointed as follows:

  • Salisbury North – Jamie Thomas formerly a player at Central District.
  • Adelaide Uni – Jamie Mason, former coach of Rostrevor O.C & North Under 17.
  • Gepps Cross – Sean Jackson from Adelaide University.
  • Henley – Scott Hodges, former coach of Seaton and assistant coach at Port Magpies
  • Rostrevor O.C. – Tim Symes ex West Adelaide player.
  • Payneham N.U.– despite relegation to Division 4, the club pulled off the coup of the year in signing Norwood legend Gary McIntosh as coach.

Henley returned to Division 1 after four years in Division 2, to be joined by Woodville South, who like Lazarus, had risen in the same period from the depths of Division 5, recovering from their free fall from Division 1 after 1990.

In the Elimination Final at Broadview, Trevor Hill’s Goodwood Saints surprised by belting Jason Roe’s home team by 19.18 to 11.9. The Qualifier also saw the home team well beaten when ROCS went down to Henley 10.12 to 20.16 despite having beaten the Sharks only the previous week. Despite another home final, ROCS then succumbed in the mud to Goodwood in extra time in the First Semi 7.6 to 11.15 and thus the dream of being the first old scholars club since SPOC in 1935 to win a Div 1 premiership was ended. However, ROCS could be justifiably proud of its year’s effort when only percentage separated it from the minor premiership.

The second semi was played in a mud bath at Klemzig but resulted in a comfortable victory for Greg Anderson’s home team against Henley 7.7 to 2.4. The Prelim at Henley saw the scores level early in the last quarter but Goodwood persisted to win 9.11 to 9.3.

Gaza went into the Grand Final at Adelaide Oval very warm favourites, but Goodwood, led by inspirational captain and Pfitzner medallist David Bartel, became the first Division 1 team to win the premiership coming from fifth position at the end of the minor round. A 5 goals to 1 third quarter won the game, the final score being a resounding 13.10 to 8.5.

Div 2 Premiership Table

(as at the end of the minor round)

SMOSH West Lakes and PAOC were back up in Division 2, the former coping much better than the latter.

Team Gms w L D Pts
Seaton Ramblers 18 14 4 0 28
PHOS Camden 18 14 4 0 28
Edwardstown 18 13 5 0 26

Scotch O.C. 18 7 11 0 14
Flinders Park 18 2 0 0 4
Prince Alfred O.C. 18 1 17 0 2

Visitors Tea Tree Gully under Kevin Baker were too good for Chris Kluzek’s SMOSH in the Elimination Final winning 14.8 to 10.8, while a close Qualifier at neutral Payneham Oval saw Matthew Dent’s Edwardstown beat Glen Sandford’s PHOS 10.8 to 9.4. Another neutral venue for PHOS, this time Edwardstown, saw it go out in the First Semi 7.12 to Gully’s 8.8, while Edwardstownwon easily at Seaton’s Pedlar Reserve 18.5 to 10.19, helped by some accuracy in front of goals. Seaton, coached by Mark Brandt, bounced back in the Prelim at home to defeat Tea Tree Gully convincingly 10.16 to 4.4, but tired in the Grand Final atAlberton Oval losing to Edwardstown 9.8 to 16.5, the Towns winning their first A grade premiership in 17 years.

Div 3 Premiership Table

(as at the end of the minor round)

Division 3 was a reasonably even competition throughout the minor round and Athelstone squeezed into the final five.

Team Gms w L D Pts
Sacred Heart O.C. 18 14 4 0 28
Modbury 18 12 5 1 25
Pembroke O.S. 18 12 5 1 25
Pooraka 18 12 6 0 24
Athelstone 18 10 8 0 20
Eastern Park 18 9 9 0 18
Old Ignatians 18 8 10 0 16
Salisbury 18 6 12 0 12
Walkerville 18 3 15 0 6
Portland 18 3 15 0 6

Athelstone’s coach Tod Barabas was reasonably confident of his team’s chances in the Elimination Final at neutral Edwardstown Oval against Pooraka, but the Bulls’ coach Paul Dittmar was smiling when his team won comfortably 8.12 to 3.10. At Modbury Oval, Ashley Mitchell’s home team was too good for John Cunningham’s Pembroke winning the Qualifying Final 7.9 to 1.3. The First Semi was played at Haslam Oval but Pooraka continued their winning run by beating Pembroke 12.14 to 8.12. Coach David Whelan was confident his Old Scholars at Sacred Heart would do well in the Second Semi at St. Mary’s Oval but fell to Modbury7.16 to 10.13. However, on a very wet Prelim. Final Saturday, his team performed better to knock out Pooraka 5.9 to 3.5 at theSacred Heart Middle School Oval and so earn another shot at Modbury. SHOC’s relative inaccuracy in front of goal in the Second Semi was repeated in the Grand Final at Blair Athol Reserve where they went down to Modbury 10.14 to 15.7.

Interstate

A new triennium of state football began in 2005 with the teams from S.A., W.A. and Victoria restricted to players under the age of 23. This arrangement was forced on the A.A.F.C., because funding for the W.A.A.F.L. from the W.A. Football Commission was contingent on it. The alternative of playing Under-23 matches against W.A. and open matches against Victoria was not pursued because of the difficulties it presented for the selection of an All-Australian amateur team.

S.A. reluctantly accepted the restriction but kept open the possibility of also arranging open matches with other bodies such as S.A. Country.

The Under-23 team under coach Bob Cross played W.A. on Saturday May 14 at Subiaco Oval, and the following players represented the SAAFL.

  • Baker, Shawn int Broadview
  • Berry, Scott hbl Henley
  • Bourne, Henry int Scotch O.C.
